Personal data
Gabriel Sandu is a multidisciplinary theatre and film artist, director and screenwriter, with extensive experience in acting -both film and theatre- and journalism. He is a graduate of the Master of Dramatic Writing at the University of Arts in Târgu Mureș and a PhD student at the same university in the Faculty of Theatre. His plays have been translated into English, French, Hungarian, Portuguese and Greek, and the performances he has directed in Bucharest or at theatres in the country have been selected for national and international festivals. His first short fiction film "Dislocated" was selected for the TIFF 2022 competition, ZFR section. Gabriel presented at SAC@Malmaison the work-in-progress documentary "Ego trip", as part of the White Night of Galleries event, a documentary about narcissistic abuse. Sandu is passionate about the docu-fiction genre, often using investigative journalism tools to document the themes of his creations, and then turning to fiction to explore various performative dimensions. The most eloquent example is the play "My Father, the Priest", inspired by the real-life case of a priest who militated against homosexuals while his own son was gay. The play has been staged twice, first at the National Theatre in Târgu Mureș, directed by Letei Popescu, and at the Apollo111 Theatre, directed by Elena Morar. Both plays have been selected in numerous theatre festivals, the latter being part of the official selection of the 2018 National Theatre Festival. Gabriel was nominated for the dramaturgy of "My Father, the Priest" at the Bucharest Fringe Festival. Gabriel has a wide experience in theatre, working in various forms of productions, from social-themed theatre in divised formula (Europes, directed by Armel Roussel at the National Theatre in Brussels, Belgium or "Worker 2.0" directed by Ioana Păun at the Paintbrush Factory in Cluj). Gabriel is also a passionate educator, working with young people since 2009 until now through the Youth Forum Association, where he holds personal development workshops for teenagers from very different backgrounds. In Constanța he staged, as director, together with Elena Morar, the play "10 Things We Forgot at the Mamaia Festival", whose text he wrote.
