Constanța State Theatre Wins Award at the International KONTAKT Theatre Festival in Poland
The Constanța State Theatre took part in the 30th edition of the International KONTAKT Theatre Festival in Toruń, Poland, one of the most important and prestigious theatre festivals in Europe.
Invited to participate in this year's anniversary edition, the Constanța State Theatre presented two performances of The Cherry Orchard by A.P. Chekhov, directed by Andrei Măjeri, on June 3 and 4. The Constanța production was the only Romanian performance selected for the festival's official programme.
For three decades, the KONTAKT Festival has brought together some of the most prominent names and companies on the international theatre scene. The 2026 edition welcomed leading figures of world theatre, including Robert Wilson, Milo Rau, Robert Lepage, and Christoph Marthaler, reaffirming the festival's status as a major platform for artistic dialogue in Europe.
During the closing gala, the festival jury presented a Special Award to set designer Oana Micu for the world she created for The Cherry Orchard. In its citation, the jury stated that the award recognises "a stage design that combines architectural boldness with exceptional functionality, creating an elaborate theatrical structure that becomes an essential performer in the overall economy of the production."
This latest distinction comes shortly after Oana Micu received the UNITER Award for Best Set Design for the same production, further confirming the impact of the Constanța production and the outstanding work of the creative team behind it.
The award, together with the production's inclusion in the official selection of the International KONTAKT Theatre Festival, marks another significant achievement for the Constanța State Theatre and contributes to strengthening the visibility of Romanian theatre on Europe's major stages.
