Constanța State Theatre: FOUR Nominations at the UNITER Awards

Today the UNITER Awards Gala 2023 nominations were announced, the most important awards in the romanian theater. For the first time in history, the Constanța State Theater has FOUR NOMINATIONS, after, in the last two years it had two nominations and an award for each year.

The four nominations are:

  • Nomination for Best Performance AwardSeaside Stories, directed by Radu Afrim, who also wrote the script. The play is a collage of texts about the sea by six contemporary Romanian authors: Marius Chivu, Lavinica Mitu, Dan Alexe, Simona Goșu, Tudor Ganea, and Nicoleta Dabija, complemented by a poem from Nina Cassian.
  • Nomination for Best Supporting Actress AwardNINA UDRESCU, for her roles in Seaside Stories.
  • Nomination for Best Supporting Actor AwardTHEODOR ȘOPTELEA, for his roles in Seaside Stories.
  • Nomination for Best Debut AwardTHEODOR CRISTIAN NICULAE, for the scenography of Seaside Stories.

After years of dedicated effort from the entire team, Constanța State Theatre has achieved its goal of reaching the elite of Romanian theatre. This is the first time the theatre has been nominated for the Best Performance Award. It is also worth noting that prior to 2021, the theatre's last UNITER nominations were in 1997 for the play Penthesilea by Mioara Cremene & H. von Kleist. Director Cătălina Buzoianu was nominated and won the award for Best Directing, while Velica Panduru received the Best Debut Award in Scenography for the same production.

The nomination for Best Performance recognizes the efforts of the entire Seaside Stories team:

The cast, in order of appearance, includes: Liliana Ghiță, Ștefan Mihai, Theodor Șoptelea, Cătălin Bucur, Marian Adochiței, Anaïs Agi-Ali (student), Cătălina Mihai, Iulian Enache, Laura Iordan, Liliana Cazan, Mihaela Velicu, Alina Manțu, Cristiana Luca, Lana Moscaliuc, Nina Udrescu, Remus Archip, Andrei Bibire, and Alex Burcă (student).

The creative team includes: assistant director Mara Oprea, lighting designer Cristian Niculescu, and scenography assistant Paula Rusu. Filming was handled by Andrei Dermengiu and Marian Adochiței, alongside director Radu Afrim, with Dermengiu also editing the video.

Technical contributors include Alexandru Bibere (lighting operator), Alexandru Popa and Eduard Lupu (sound operators), and Andrei Dermengiu/Emil Băncilă (technical directors).


Yesterday, the UNITER Senate announced its Lifetime Achievement Awards, bringing additional joy to Constanța State Theatre. The Lifetime Achievement Award for Scenography was given to CARMENCITA BROJBOIU, one of Romania’s most renowned scenographers. Based in Constanța, where she began her career, Brojboiu has collaborated with top Romanian and international directors, worked in most major Romanian theatres, and received numerous accolades recognizing her work at the highest level.

Her passion for theatre began in Constanța, where she was fascinated by the production Miles Gloriosus, directed by Silviu Purcărete. Her first ten years as a scenographer were closely tied to the puppet theatre and productions with director Mona Chirilă. Currently, Carmencita Brojboiu serves on the Artistic Council of Constanța State Theatre.


The play Seaside Stories will have two performances this weekend: Friday, March 17, at 7:00 PM, and Saturday, March 18, at 12:00 PM. Both performances are sold out.
